quadro_bikeOne of the factors that most “screw up” the loading speed is the physical distance between the server hosting the website and the visitor’s computer, since the server can be in Spain and the visitor can access the website from Australia, in this case there is a distance of more than 10,000 kilometers, evidently the latencies are much higher than if a visitor from Madrid enters a server located in Madrid.
The use of a CDN on a website will help us keep a good upload speed, despite the fact that the visitors entering the web site to thousands of kilometers of the web server, the web server also download the task of serving the static files of the web site.
Many webmasters and server administrators do not support the version of a CDN can help a lot to reduce the server load and to improve the speed of loading, but in this case I want to provide evidence so that the readers can see for themselves, as improving the speed of load in different parts of the planet using a CDN, being able to see the difference between using a CDN and not using CDN on a same web site.
For the tests we have used a web server hosted in Spain and your selected option as CDN, to test the speed we have used PingDom Tools.
We’re going to start to show the tests performed, in the first place we are going to show the WITH CDN and WITHOUT CDN to a web server hosted in Spain, performing the test from Amsterdam (the Netherlands):
As you can see, in this case the distance is the least noticeable, since the server and the visitor are both in Europe, where connectivity is excellent and transoceanic cables do not have to intervene.
In the following case we present the same case, server in Madrid and visitor in Stockholm (Sweden), the tests again are carried out with and without CDN:
In this case the results are even better than in the case of Amsterdam, since the distance is more or less the same and it seems that connectivity is better with Sweden than with Holland.
In the next case we go a little further, the server in Spain and the visitor accesses from the east coast of the United States, specifically from New York, once again it is tested with CDN and without CDN:
In this case it can be observed that without the CDN the response time increases and the load speed is very slow (it goes from 1 second to 2 seconds), but with the CDN it is possible to mitigate a little distance and improve the speed.
In the next case we go a little further to the center of the USA, specifically the visitor is in Dallas, and the server as in the previous occasions is in Spain, the results with and without CDN are the following:
As you can see, the distance between the server and the visitor is already beginning to be enough, but still the CDN manages to mitigate the distance by serving the static from points of presence closer to the visitor.
In the next case we will see the same, but in this case the visitor is on the west coast of the USA, specifically in California (United States) and the server again is in Spain:
In this case the effect of the CDN is very noticeable and in this case your option as cdn provider has a direct presence in San Jose, California, just in the same city where the visitor is. You can save 4 seconds only with the CDN effect.
In the latter case things go further, since the distance is about 15,000 kilometers, the server is in Spain as in previous occasions, but the visitor accesses from Melbourne (Australia).
As you can see, in this case the thing is much more beast and you notice much more the effect of the CDN, since without CDN the load speed reaches 5.5 seconds, while with the CDN the load speed improves up to little more than a second.
As the end point of this article we will show where the selected service of CDN points that have been “tapped” for this article are located.:
I think that after providing all this evidence it has become clear that a CDN can help us maintain excellent load speeds even though the distance between the web server and the visitor is extremely large.
