mrebviesIs it that time of the year (again), where you want to make upgrades and accessorise your beloved 4-wheeled baby? If you are keen to add something to your rig, but aren’t sure on what it is that you want to do, you may want to consider fitting a bull bar.
What are Bull Bars?
Bull bars, as the name suggests, are designed to protect you and your vehicle from collisions with animals. For those who like to off-road in roo-populated areas, getting a Bull Bar or also called Nudge Bar would certainly be a good investment. A bull bar is also a great accessory, as it allows you to mount various attachments including spot lights and radio antennas, turning your ride into a serious off-road machine. A bull bar also adds to the aesthetic value to your vehicle giving it a tough and sturdy exterior.
Bull Bars not only protect your vehicle’s front from damage when you’re hitting uneven ground, but a bull bar will also put a mean streak into the look of your vehicle. You will be able to drive over curbs, trees and rocks without the worry of causing any serious damage.
Before purchasing your bull bar, here are a few things that you may want to consider:
• Aesthetics
For obvious reasons, the bulbar has to be aesthetically pleasing – otherwise you won’t hear the end of it from all of the guys. It is the first thing that people will notice once fitted. While this is an important factor to consider when purchasing a bull bar, it shouldn’t be the only deciding factor.
You have to ensure the bull bar size matches the chassis of your 4×4. Browse our large range Bull Bars & Nudge Bars and their different styles here.
• Functionality
One of the most important aspects to consider is the functionality of the bull bar. When you strike a sizeable animal like a kangaroo, the collision can completely ruin the state of your car and leave you stranded in the middle of the great Aussie bush. However, with a sturdy bull bar mounted to your vehicle, you can protect the front, meaning that the impact of the collision won’t totally write your car off, giving it a second chance at life.
Ideally, you wouldn’t want to get into an accident or hit anything, however kangaroos are extremely unpredictable animals and can jump out in front of your vehicle from nowhere, often when you are travelling at a fast speed, when you least expect it.
If you know you will be doing lots of driving on the secluded bush roads, you’re better off safe than sorry – install a high-functioning bull bar on your vehicle.
• Where you will be driving your Off Road 4×4
You probably already know where you will be doing the most driving – whether you’re an avid beach explorer or like the tough, bush terrain, you need to consider the environment where you will be taking your 4×4 most.
Some vehicles are lower than others, and depending on the terrain – massive ditches can do damage to your vehicle and your bull bar, which why you need to establish where you will be taking your vehicle when shopping for a bull bar.
PX tip: Add an underbody protection plate “Bash Plate” in addition to your bull bar to protect your vehicle against damage from a lack of ground clearance.
• What type of driving you’ll do
Have you already pictured the unsealed roads that you’ll be hitting once you have your bull bar fitted? One thing to consider when driving off-road, is that your vehicle can be exposed to all kinds of hazards – including rocks, sticks and ruts, among many others, which can get stuck in odd places. With your new bull bar installed, you won’t have to worry when you’re unknowingly driving towards a log that could impale your vehicle, or sticks that may get caught up through your front underbody and potentially damage your vehicle.
Bull bars are sturdy – made of solid material that can be harder to pierce compared to the front bumper of your car.
• Design and Engineering
The safety aspect of the bull bar is probably one of the most crucial things to consider. Ensure the bull bar meets ADR requirements and is compatible with airbags. There’s no point in you getting a top-of-the-range bull bar if it makes your 4×4 illegal or unsafe to run.
Bull bars are engineered in many different forms – steel, alloy and plastic. Each having their own pro’s and con’s. If you are unsure of what kind of bull bar is best for your vehicle, speak to one of our friendly experts who are more than happy to help you with your decision.
• Vehicle Compatibility
When deciding on a bull bar, you need to check that the bull bar you want to purchase has been designed to suit your specific vehicle. There are also generic bull bars available on the market, and while the latter may be cheaper, it will give you less quality and protection.
Accessorising your 4×4 is always exciting, adding new gadgets gives you a thrill when you hit the road. These are just a few of the main things that you should consider when purchasing a bull bar. At PX Warehouse, we design our bull bars to withstand the harsh Australian conditions.
Although built to take endure damage, bull bars can also be prone to bending and damaging, depending of the severity of the hit. And although sometimes the damage may look quite bad, bull bars can be easily brought back to their original form, meaning that your entire bull bar will not need to be replaced, and can be repaired for a fraction of the cost than if you sustained damage directly to your car.
