Once you've passed the challenge, now you're sitting on a shiny new prop account. Now comes the part where you link that account to MetaTrader 5 (MT5) and start doing what you're here for. If you're scratching your head wondering how to connect MT5 to your instant funding prop account, don't worry. It's not as intimidating as it sounds.
Why MT5?
Before we go into the how, let’s quickly go over the why. Most instant funding prop firms give you the option to trade using either MT4 or MT5. MT5 is just the newer, more upgraded version. It’s faster, smoother, and packed with more features, multi-asset support, economic calendar integration, better charting tools, and the ability to run multiple strategies without slowing down.
Step 1: Get Your Login Credentials from the Prop Firm
Let’s assume you’ve signed up with an instant funding prop firm something like FTMO’s Rapid account, The Funded Trader’s Knight Program, or MyForexFunds. Once your account is activated the firm will usually send you an email with everything you need to log in:
Your MT5 account number
Your trader password
The server's name
Sometimes a link to MetaTrader 5 download if you haven’t already
If you haven’t received that email, check your spam or junk folder as it often ends up there. Still nothing? Reach out to their support. Don't try to guess your way in or you'll end up locked out.
Step 2: Download and Install MT5
If you don’t already have MT5 on your device, head over to the official MetaTrader website or use the link the prop firm provides. Just make sure you’re downloading the right version as some prop firms use a white-labeled MT5 which means you’ll need to use their specific version.
Installing it is easy. Just follow the prompts like you would for any other app.
If you're planning to trade on your phone or tablet then you can also download MT5 from the App Store or Google Play. But remember the mobile version has limited features compared to the desktop one.
Step 3: Open MT5 and Find the Correct Server
Here’s where a lot of people get tripped up. When you open MT5 for the first time and try to log in, you’ll need to find the exact server your prop firm uses. It won’t always be obvious.
To do this:
Open MT5.
Click on File > Login to Trade Account.
In the Server field, start typing the name of the server provided in your email.
If it doesn’t show up automatically then click Add New Broker and type in the firm’s name to search.
Sometimes the server names are weird like PropFirm-Live1 or InstantFunding-Demo2. Just copy and paste it if you're unsure.
Once the correct server shows up, you’re halfway there.
Step 4: Log Into Your Trading Account
Now that you've got the server sorted out, it's time to log in using the credentials from your email.
Login = Your account number
Password = Your trader password
Server = The one we just talked about
If you get a connection failure or invalid account message then double-check your password. Make sure you didn’t accidentally copy a space when pasting the server's name because that tiny space can mess everything up.
Once you’ve logged in you should see your account balance pop up in the Navigator window.
Step 5: Confirm Everything Is Working
It’s tempting to jump right in and start placing trades but hold up. Make sure everything is working first.
Here’s a quick checklist:
Your account balance is correct
You can see live price feeds
You can open and close demo trades without error
You’re connected to the right server and account type like standard, ECN, raw spread, etc.
If all that checks out then you’re good to go. If something looks off like the spreads are crazy wide or the symbols don’t match what the firm advertised, get in touch with their support team ASAP.
Step 6: Add Symbols You’ll Be Trading
Most MT5 terminals don’t show all available instruments by default. So, if you're like Wait then where’s US30? Then don’t panic.
To show all the available pairs and symbols:
Press Ctrl+U or right-click in the Market Watch window.
Scroll through the list and look for the instruments you want.
Click Show next to each one or click Show All if you want everything.
Now you’ll be able to pull up charts and trade those pairs.
Step 7: Set Up Your Charts and Templates
MT5 isn’t exactly out of the box. That gray-on-gray chart? Not exactly inspiring. But you can tweak it to suit your trading style.
Change chart colors, add your favorite indicators, and save templates as it’s all customizable.
Right-click on any chart > Properties to change the look.
Use the Indicators button to add things like Moving Averages, RSI, MACD, etc.
Once you’ve got your chart set up the way you like, right-click > Template > Save Template. That way, you can apply it to other charts instantly.
